Making Learning Visible Via BigBlueButton

In the virtual classroom, learning is often invisible. Without the physical cues of a brick-and-mortar room, it is easy to treat a live lesson like a runway; a straight, uninterrupted path to a destination. However, high-impact teaching demands that a lesson be peppered with "forks in the road," where real-time data on learning dictates the route that the teacher takes.

Elaine’s session explores how to leverage BigBlueButton to maximise participation ratio and implement the principles of formative assessment in online teaching.

Session Objectives

• Differentiate between the "runway" lesson model and the "fork in the road" responsive teaching model.
• Maximise Participation Ratio using specific BBB features (Polls, Chat, Public Whiteboard).
• Design effective hinge questions and execute a "Chat Blast" to gather clean, uncorrupted formative data.
• Utilise breakout rooms strategically to remove obstacles to engagement.

About Elaine Warriner

Elaine Warriner is a UK-educated history teacher and senior leader with 27 years of classroom experience and 8 years directing institutional pedagogy and teacher development. A graduate of the University of Sheffield (BA Hons, PGCE) and alumnus of the University of Idaho, she holds National Professional Qualifications in Senior Leadership (NPQSL) and Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD). 

Her interest in driving lesson engagement stems from training teachers and developing colleagues alongside partners like StepLab, Teach First and the University of Cambridge. Elaine's classroom practice spans multiple humanities subjects, and she works as an advanced-level coursework moderator for UK exam boards.
